Police urge drivers to come forward in pedestrian hit-and-run

“There is a family behind every hit and run,” the sister of a deceased 47-year-old South Florida woman told reporters this month. She and her family are still trying to cope with the fact that their loved one was struck by not only one inattentive driver but a second right after the first accident. And because both drivers are said to have fled the scene, the victim’s family is left with more questions than answers.

What Florida investigators do know is that the pedestrian accident occurred when the 47-year-old tried to cross the street at a red light in the South Florida city of Hollywood. Police say she was hit first by an SUV a little after 8:00 p.m. then run over by a Hyundai Elantra moments later. Although she was rushed to an area hospital, she later died from what proved to be fatal injuries.

But because both drivers fled the scene, police have not been able to hold anyone responsible for the woman’s death nor has the victim’s family been able to gain a sense of closer from the accident. Along with police, the victim’s family is urging the two drivers to acknowledge that there was a life lost by coming forward to police. Although they know this will not bring back their loved one, it will at least mean that justice can be served later on.

It’s important to point out that if the drivers responsible for the hitting the woman are found, it’s possible then that criminal charges could be filed, especially because negligence could be a factor in this case. If it’s determined that negligence was a factor, then the victim’s family might also want to file a wrongful death claim as well, though it’s possible that they will have to wait for judgment in the criminal case before getting resolution to their personal injury case.
