Man and dog killed in Florida motor vehicle collision

On Behalf of | Mar 5, 2015 | Car Accidents |

A traumatic crash killed one man and a dog that was in his car and sent his passenger and two other individuals to the hospital. The motor vehicle collision happened on Seven Mile Bridge in the Florida Keys on Feb. 25, according to local sources. This was the third fatality to be attributed to a car accident this year in that area of Florida.

According to the accident report, witnesses saw a vehicle driven by a 25-year-old man attempting to pass several vehicles by going south in the northbound lane. As a result, he struck another vehicle heading north head on. The force of the impact killed the man and a dog that was also in the vehicle. His passenger, a 26-year-old woman, was seriously hurt and was subsequently airlifted to a nearby trauma center.

The couple in the other vehicle, a 79-year-old female driver and her 81-year-old husband, were also taken to a local hospital with undisclosed injuries. Given that the driver deemed responsible for the crash was killed in the impact, no charges will be filed by Florida authorities. However, the story serves as a cautionary tale about reckless driving.

In the absence of a criminal trial dealing with this motor vehicle collision, the injured parties in both cars will be entitled to file personal injury suits against the estate of the deceased driver. Florida civil law dictates that if enough evidence of wrongdoing is uncovered in a police investigation, such a suit can be filed in civil court. The more evidence accrued, the better the chances of success in such a case.
