Tourist killed in car accident in Florida

On Behalf of | Feb 17, 2015 | Car Accidents |

An Irish tourist has been tragically killed in a hit-and-run, according to local news sources. Florida authorities have not clarified whether the man’s family in Ireland has been informed of the car accident that killed the 36-year-old man in the early morning hours of Feb. 7. However, the driver deemed responsible is now in police custody awaiting trial.

The details of the accident are not widely discussed in this report, but sources have confirmed that the man and two of his friends were leaving a bar and returning to their hotel when the accident happened. Apparently, the three men were crossing the street when the 36-year-old was struck and killed. The driver behind the wheel fled the scene.

However, a friend of the driver noticed the damage to the front of his vehicle and alerted police, who subsequently arrested the man. He has been charged with leaving the scene of an accident causing death. There has been no mention of a trial date at this time, nor have police offered any insight as to why the accident might have taken place or if alcohol is suspected to have been involved.

Regardless of whether the car accident was the result of driver intoxication, or if the driver is successfully arraigned on the existing criminal charge, the family of the slain man will be entitled under Florida law to file a civil lawsuit against the driver. While this process may be complicated by the fact that the victim was not an American citizen, the law is quite clear in this regard. The family will be entitled to file a wrongful death suit in a civil court local to the region.
