Tips for recovering from whiplash after a car accident

On Behalf of | May 13, 2016 | Car Accidents, Fort Walton BeachLegal Blog |

One of the most common injuries in a car accident is whiplash. Some people are immediately aware of it following the crash and others start to feel the pain and symptoms in the days and weeks that follow. The recovery process and amount of time it takes to recover from whiplash can vary widely, depending on the severity of the injury and the steps the injured individual takes to facilitate recovery.

Here are some tips for recovering from the affects of whiplash, provided by Professor Gwendolen Jull of the University of Queensland.

  • Try to keep a normal routine. Gradually get back into your normal routine, making modifications and adjustments as needed. Make it your goal, however, to return normal range of motion.
  • Stay active and return to work, if possible. Studies show that those who return to work and activities have a better recovery than those who do not.
  • Work with a physical therapist to develop an exercise program for your neck and upper back to strengthen the muscular system.
  • Pay attention to your posture. Make sure you are maintaining good posture, both while being active and while at rest to ensure spine health.
  • Develop adaptations to your routine that minimize strain to the area and avoid undue stress to the area.
  • Think before you lift. Make sure you don’t create additional problems for this area of the body at a time when it is already weak.
