A serious crash in Clay County has left five people dead and two children in a local hospital, according to local news. Florida authorities responded to the two-car accident on June 15. So far, police have not determined exactly what caused the car accident, but their investigation is continuing in the wake of this terrible tragedy.

The accident report states that a vehicle driven by a 29-year-old man may have crossed the center line on Florida 21, leading his vehicle into the path of a car coming from the opposite direction.  All four adults in his vehicle, including his wife and another relative, were killed outright in the impact. The driver of the other vehicle, a 22-year-old woman, was also killed on the spot.

The only two survivors were the male driver’s two children, ages 4 and 2. The children were in critical condition when the authorities arrived and had to be rushed to a local hospital for immediate treatment. It is not clear at this time if they have been stabilized and/or whether they are out of immediate danger. It appears they may have been saved by the proper use of car seats.

Obviously no criminal charges will be filed in this terrible car accident, as both drivers were killed in the crash. However, the family of the deceased second driver may choose to file a wrongful death suit against the man’s estate, pursuant to Florida law. Given enough evidence, the civil case could result in monetary damages being awarded to the deceased woman’s family.
