Most drivers in Florida place their safety and the safety of other motorists as a top priority every time they get behind the wheel. Unfortunately, not all drivers are as safe or responsible as they should be. When a negligent driver causes an accident and flees the scene, those affected are not only left traumatized but often confused about what to do next.
Driver flees the scene of a serious crash
Recently in Sarasota, a man was arrested and charged after allegedly causing a fatal accident and fleeing the scene. The accident happened at night in the southbound lanes of Interstate 75 near mile marker 196. According to police reports, a sedan crashed into the side of a pickup truck that had four occupants. Reports said the collision knocked the pickup truck onto the grass shoulder of the roadway where it overturned and ejected two passengers.
Tragically, authorities said one of those ejected died at the scene while another passenger died a short time later at a hospital. The pickup truck driver and another passenger were also seriously injured and taken to an area hospital. The driver of the sedan fled the scene but was located a short time later, police said. Reportedly, the driver was arrested and charged with DUI manslaughter and leaving the scene of a crash involving death.
Where can victims and families get help?
It is unfortunate that hit-and-run accidents are not uncommon in Florida. In many of these accidents, the at-fault driver flees the scene to escape responsibility. However, when car accidents result in death or injury, those affected have the right to speak with an attorney about taking legal action. Damages from a successful lawsuit could help to ease the pain and suffering of victims and families.
